A Quick Recap from this episode
Today I’m sharing a bit of a personal episode with you. I’m breaking down 7 things that I wish I had done differently in the beginning stages of my entrepreneurship journey, and I think this is especially important to hear if you’re just getting started with your money coaching business. Hopefully you can apply these things to your own business, learn from someone who has been there and done that, and do things differently to save yourself a lot of time and struggle.
Here are the 7 things I wish I did differently at the start of my business:
1. I wish I had started sooner.
This one may seem kind of obvious because we always feel this way when we find something we enjoy, but I got started when I didn’t know what I was going to do and fell in financial coaching because it was what I felt I had a handle on. I started with several iterations of this business before I started coaching, and even though I’m all about no regrets, if I had known what I know now, I just would have had more confidence in myself and my abilities and started sooner.
2. I wish I would have known that ignorance is bliss and shamelessness sells.
Especially in the money coaching space, we tend to be very hard on ourselves because we’re over-analyzers. Once you recognize and embrace and are confident about the fact that you're selling something that is really valuable and really life changing to people, that’s when you’re more confident to show up and make sales and start to build those connections. If I don’t have all the answers it’s okay.
3. I wish I would have stuck it out longer.
Literally anything. I bounced from thing to thing a lot and never really gave anything enough time to work. I gave up on a lot of things because I tried once and didn’t see instant results, but business isn’t an overnight success story. Building your coaching business will take time. Just like with anything in your life or business, if you want something to be successful, you’ve got to stick it out.
4. I wish I would have created a framework for my coaching, and ultimately sold my methodology.
I’ve talked about this a lot on the podcast, but you need to have a process that you follow. It helps your client orient themselves in where they're at in your work together. And it also sells your coaching so much easier. Make sure you have everything prepared to support that framework. It's not just like building out the step by steps, but then it's also delivering that and making sure that your clients get results.
5. I wish I would have trusted that I wasn't bothering anyone.
This one’s a little bit funny, but this is the reason why I think so many of us just don't see the results happen. We get really excited about our program or the thing we’ve created, but then crickets. And there's no one coming in, there's no one buying, there's no one engaging, and we start to feel like we can’t keep talking about it over and over because people will get annoyed. The truth is that everyone is worried about themselves so most people are never going to be bothered.
6. I wish I had spent time on revenue generating activities and stopped “playing business.”
In our business owner worlds there’s always so much to do and it’s easy to get caught up in things that don’t matter. We make ourselves believe that certain things are crucial to success when they’re really not that important and we could do without them if we needed to. If you're feeling really strapped for time, you need to do an audit of where you're spending your time. Ask yourself, “what's the shortest pathway to getting revenue?”
7. I wish I had dropped the “shoulds.”
You don’t HAVE to do anything. Pay attention to where you’re feeling rundown and don’t be afraid to pivot away from something if it isn’t working for you, even if a coach or mentor told you it was the right direction. You don’t have to keep doing anything or do it a certain way, and you’ll actually be more likely to avoid burnout if you keep focusing on what feels good and what’s working, instead of trying to do everything your industry claims you’re supposed to do.
So those are the seven things I wish I did differently in my money coaching business when I first started, and I hope they help you. And whether you're brand new, or you've been doing this business for a while, I think there's much to glean from this
