This week I’m sharing a peek into my content creation routine. A big part of marketing our businesses (and especially if you have an online coaching business) is using some form of content and posting it online. Whether you have a blog, a podcast, or any social media channel, you are creating content for that platform, and there are some really specific things I want you to know about the content creation process that will save you time and actually help you book more clients.

I use my own tool, the Client Attraction Content Matrix when creating content because it makes it so easy to come up with ideas, make the content, and save tons of time, but I’ve got some other things in my content creation routine that I think can really help you. But I want to start with talking about the pressure we all feel when it comes to creating content.

1. On the one hand, yes, there is an approach and a strategy to creating content, but we get so caught up in perfectionism and keep ourselves from even taking the first tip. The best tip I can give you is that you just need to get into the groove of writing. Take the pressure off (easier said than done, I know) and allow yourself to write just to start writing. Getting started is the hardest part!

2. Another thing is that people make this process so much bigger than it is that they don’t even allow themselves to sit down and start. Before they even get writer’s block, they get starter’s block and won’t even put it on the calendar. So to fix this, start practicing writing more efficiently. Give yourself a set amount of time like 30 minutes to an hour to write and give yourself a specific goal (like one post) that you have to have written by the end of that time.

3. I also recommend breaking up the pieces of the content creation. With just one piece of content you have the ideation piece, mapping it out with a story or an outline, the actual recording or writing, and then potentially a video element as well. Break up those pieces so you can focus on brainstorming ideas all at once, writing all at once, etc. instead of context switching.

So now that we’ve covered all of that, let’s dive into my content creation routine:

The monthly plan

I highly recommend checking out Episode 170 of the podcast to hear a deep dive of how I organize my week for a full-time coaching business, but once you’ve gotten through that, I really zoom out from the weekly perspective and look at how I’m creating any piece of content.

I have two platforms that I use for my marketing and content: my podcast and Instagram. Those are the two content platforms that I focus on, and I highly recommend that you start with one (probably social media) platform to start connecting with your audience.

For the podcast, I have a monthly plan where about 2 weeks before the start of a month, I’ll sit down and ideate all the content for the next month. I usually time block a space to brainstorm the ideas of things that are going to resonate with my ideal clients. If I have time left (and if I don’t, this is just another day) I’ll start batching the notes for those topics.

For social media, I take a look at my marketing plan (which includes my content matrix) where I’ve usually already ideated all the post topics I want to post about. I’ll take all of these ideas and start to pull them into my social media calendar. I don’t get too far ahead when it comes to social media because I feel good about keeping a sustainable schedule.

The biweekly plan

Once I know what I’m talking about for the podcast and social media and have my topic ideas planned out, it’s pretty smooth sailing. I might start pre-recording my podcast episodes in batch recording sessions. I also might batch taking photos to use for social media and my podcast graphics (or I may just source some old photos that I have).

Another thing that I’ll do for my social media is looking at creating graphics for my social media in addition to the photos that I took. So I figure out what posts I want to turn into a graphic and then take the time to go create the graphic. All of these different batch sessions happen in time blocks and don’t usually happen back to back. It really is just piecing everything together little by little.

The weekly plan

Finally, in one content themed morning, I’ll take the graphics or photos that I created and the ideas/outlines/notes that I have and start filling in the gaps to write out the remaining pieces of the content. So I’ll pull together the final versions of my podcast episode and social media posts for the week, usually a week ahead of time, and they’re ready to post!

That really is it! I know it sounds easier said than done, but I would have no energy to create content if I put the pressure on myself to sit down and create content from start to finish in that moment. Being able to break up those tasks and break down what actually needs to be done in the time block I’ve set aside, gives me the freedom and creativity to get even further ahead. Make your tasks very doable and schedule them in your calendar. You got this!
