This week, I’m addressing the comments that a prominent figure in the financial space made on a Fox News Segment regarding Stimulus Checks and calling people “screwed” if $600 or $1400 would change their life.

It disappointed me as a financial coach, to hear someone so prominent in the space, use blame and shame about underlying problems (many of which have been created due to record high unemployment rates, underlying stress of living through a pandemic, and ongoing systemic inequities) to be the reasons why stimulus checks shouldn’t exist because if they did, you’re screwed so might as well just not give anyone anything…?

Whether you’re a follower, a fan, or a hater of DR, that’s not the point of this episode.

Here, I’ll be addressing these comments as a coach who has seen the in’s and out’s of my clients’ finances through a pandemic and has seen the previous stimulus checks (that haven’t been enough, IMO) have life-changing impacts, despite any underlying problems that have lead my clients to hire me as their coach in the first place.

I respect that he offers helpful advice to the masses, and his approach does work with many people, and I also want to make space in this industry for those who would like to coach from a place of empathy, perspective, and connectedness instead of blame or shame, because the latter isn’t always effective for all clients and it can cause long-term harm even if it has short-term benefits.
